I am definitely a madman with a box.

So I'm sort of obsessed with Doctor Who right now. Probably because it's completely awesome. David Tennant is my favorite, but when I'm drawing I keep coming back to Matt Smith. His face is an interesting shape, and his hair is crazy, which I like because I'm crap at drawing hair.

I drew this over the course of the last couple of weeks.

Things I like: the hair, the eyes, the lines on his forehead. And the bowtie. Bowties are cool.

Things I dislike: his chin is huge, and his lips look weird. He kind of looks like a Frank Quitely character, which isn't awful, but not really what I was going for. Also not really sure what's going on with the shadows. I've never really crosshatched before, so I gave that a try, and then it got a little too thick on his cheek so I took an eraser to it. I'm experimenting, though, which is what this whole thing is all about.

It only vaguely looks like Matt Smith, but oh well. Maybe some day I'll be done drawing faces over and over. Until then. Onward and upward.

Experimenting is good, learning the basics should be the priority. That said, I'm not a Doctor Who fan at all and I immediately recognized who that was. The problem with your crosshatching here is that it is all the same "weight". Open it up and play around to get more subtle shading. Also always remember that you don't need to draw every line you see.
